My first album, I think a Christmas present, was this one. A Canadian release called Long Tall Sally, on Capitol Records.
Over the years I know for a fact that I bought, and listened to, every record the Beatles ever released - including the legendary Black Album. I know their repertoire Inside Out.
What prompts this thought is having lunch with friends today, while in the next room some kind of Christmas thing was happening with an all Beatles soundtrack.
Yes they were incredible. Yes, virtually every song that they ever recorded is still a classic. Yes, they influenced generations of young musicians.
And yet, I’ve realized, if I never hear another Beatles song again, I won’t miss them.
It’s just been too many times, over too many years, and within seconds of the opening chord of any Beatles’ song I just shut down and stop listening.
Besides, in the half century since they stopped making music together, there have been hundreds or thousands of other musicians that have delighted, challenged, or amazed me. The musical standards that John, Paul, George, and Ringo set have been surpassed.
So there you have it. I’ve said it. Dear God, I’m tired of Beatles music.
